About UK

  • The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom or the UK, is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of mainland Europe.
  • It is comprised of four neighboring island countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
  • Although England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are “nations”, they are not officially independent countries. Instead, they are part of the country of the United Kingdom (UK)—and bound by the UK constitution.
  • Each of the four UK countries has local governments, which manage local affairs, such as healthcare and other social services.
  • A democratically-elected UK government oversees all national and international affairs, including student visas and other education-related regulations.
  • The capital city, and the largest city of the UK, is London. It is also the capital of England.
  • The capital of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Island are Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast respectively.
  • The population of the UK is 67.7 million people (2019 estimate).
  • The UK is a highly multicultural country, made up of people from many different cultural and religious backgrounds.

UK Economy

  • The economy of the UK is a highly developed social market and market-oriented economy. It is the fifth-largest national economy in the world measured by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), tenth-largest by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), and twenty-first largest by GDP per capita, constituting 3.3% of world GDP.
  • The sectors that contribute most to the U.K.’s GDP are services, manufacturing, construction, and tourism.
  • The Office for National Statistics produces Gross Value Added (GVA) data in terms of Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS). The lowest spatial area for which they are made is NUTS 3

Education System

Level 5 Higher National Diploma(HND) HND usually has vocational or professional elements.
It is equivalent to the first two years of a university course.
Level 5 Diploma Of Higher Education (DipHE) The course can be academic but is mainly linked to a particular job or profession such as nursing and social work. They are normally equivalent to the first two years of a degree.
Level 5 Foundation Degree (FDA) A foundation degree is equivalent to the first two years of an honors Degree. It usually involves Academic study and work-based learning with an employer.
Level 6 or honors level Bachelors Degree Undergraduate, Academic studies, typical 3 years in length
Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma and certificates (PGcert/PG Dip) Post Graduate Certificates and diplomas allow students to study something new or build on the skills and knowledge already gained during the undergraduate degree. They are usually shorter than Masters and students won’t have to do a thesis or dissertation.
Level 7 Master’s Degree One Year Post Graduate Studies obtained after completing an undergraduate degree. Master’s programs can be study-based or research-Based.
Level 8 Doctorate (Ph.D.) The Highest Academic Level students can achieve, often leading to a career in academics (as a lecturer or a researcher) a master’s degree is often required for admission to a Ph.D. but isn’t always necessary.

  • For Postgraduate – 1 year / 2 year or 1+1
