Express Entry Overview
The Express Entry system is the first step to immigrating to Canada. Express Entry is an online system that IRCC uses to manage applications for permanent residence from skilled workers.
Anyone who is accepted into the Express Entry pool could get an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence. Draws to invite candidates to apply for permanent residence are expected to take place every fortnight. If you have been invited to apply, you will have 60 days to submit a complete electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR).
Federal Skilled Workers
Federal skilled workers (FSW) are chosen as permanent residents based on their ability to settle in Canada and take part in the Canadian economy. All applicants wishing to apply under this category, first need to have 67 points out of 100 to qualify under this category.
Minimum Requirements
- English Language: A score of 6.0 across all bands in IELTS (General)
- Must have at least one-year work experience in the last 10 years
- All education certificates must have Education Credential Assessment in Canada
- Proof of funds per family size.
- Should not be Inadmissible to Canada.
Federal Skilled Trades Program
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for people who have qualifying work experience in a skilled trade. Typically, FSTP draws are lower than FSW and CEC draw, and eligible applicants are invited to apply for PR twice in a calendar year.
Minimum Requirements
- Education – Grade 12 with trade diploma or required apprenticeship training
- English language– Minimum CLB 5 or IELTS (General) 5 bands.

- Work Experience – At least two years in the last 5 years
- Trade Certificate – Must have trade Certificate of Qualification (COQ) issued by province trade regulatory body in OR have a Positive LMIA
- Settlement funds – Depends on the number of family members included in the application.
Skilled Trades Occupations
- Major Group 72, industrial, electrical, and construction trades
- Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades
- Major Group 82, supervisors and technical occupations in natural resources, agriculture, and related production
- Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing, and utility supervisors and central control operators
- Minor Group 632, chefs, cooks; and -Minor group 633, butchers and bakers.
Canadian Experience Class
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) allows foreign nationals who have at least one year of Canadian work experience to apply for Permanent Residence. In order to qualify, the applicant must:
- Have at least 1 year of full-time (or an equal amount in part-time) skilled work experience in Canada in the three years before you apply, in one or more occupations.
- Meet the required English language needed for your job.
- Must have Educational Credential Assessment of foreign educational credentials.
